Earth Day (or Arbor Day) is a world wide holiday which demonstrates support of environmental protection. Most years at NC State, people are all over the Brickyard passing out seeds, BPA free reusable water bottles, information about alternate modes of transportation, and so on and so forth. Today, I got my free trade coffee with recyclable EcoGrip and mug and headed on down to the Brickyard to pick up some free swag. To my shock, the Brickyard was empty! No seeds, no water bottles, to tee shirts, no information about saving the planet! I was actually more upset that no one showed up to celebrate Earth Day instead of being upset about free stuff!
In response to this scary disappointment, I am posting three craft ideas for reusing and recycling the products you already have at home.

Tin Can Caddy from Sow & Dipity
This is such a great idea! We all have tin cans laying around our house and recycling bins! Simply wash them, peel off the label, paint, and attach to a painted wooden plunger handle! This caddy is great for all outdoor activities such as carrying picnic utensils, or gardening tools. Easy to make, and easy to save!
Indoor Herb Garden from Design Sponge
Another great idea! Everyone loves fresh herbs, so, if you enjoy cooking, this is a many saver and a great way to produce fresh oxygen in your kitchen! Simply build (or buy) a wooden box, line the bottom of the box with rocks, add soil and plant your herbs. Also a great and easy/non-smelly idea is to use this herb sanctuary as a compost pile. Best thing you can use is stuff like coffee grounds, egg shells and paper. This won't be stinky and it will all be a natural fertilizer for your plants. If you don't want a compost pile in your kitchen, you can also purchase a big pot/box and set it outside. Use the box as a planter for flowers - they will love the rich soil!
Save the planet...one step at a time!
This is really a craft idea, but in light of being Earth Day, I felt like it fits our theme. Start saving the world in your own home. Turn off the faucet while you are brushing your teeth, put a 2 liter coke bottle filled with water in the back of your toilet to conserve water, recycle plastics, clip the coke can holders, and even just turn out the lights when you don't need them. We only have one planet, and we only have one chance to perserve it before it goes beyond repair! Start today by making a small eco-friendly change and start to experience a greener lifestyle!
Happy Earth Day!!
